Part of the appeal of retractable awnings, and one feature which makes them a practical asset for both home and business owners, is how easy it is to keep them looking beautiful and functioning smoothly. For a retractable awning, "maintenance" boils down to occasional washing and routinely closing it to keep the awning fabric and frame in prime condition. Gentle Cleaning The major concern for retractable awning fabric is stains caused by leaves, vines, tree sap, and other elements like smoke, particularly in autumn as leaves fall and plants begin to die back. Cleaning an awning has only two steps: 1. Use a broom to gently remove leaves and debris. 2. Hose down the awning, making sure to avoid the end of the awning with the motor, if motorized.
For a more thorough cleaning, use a soft-bristled brush and dish soap, working from the bottom up. If there is a persistent stain, mix a quarter cup of soap and a half cup of bleach in one gallon of lukewarm water, and soak the stain for 20 minutes, then rinse. There are some things to avoid when cleaning a retractable awning: Do not use a pressure cleaner, as it will damage the fabric. To prevent mold, mildew, or water stains, make sure that the awning is completely dry before closing it, unless there are high winds. Never use detergent on retractable awning fabric and avoid using the bleach-soap cleaner when possible. Most high quality retractable awning fabrics have several fabric treatments to prevent mildew and stains; harsh cleaners remove that treatment. Avoid heat. Some solution-dyed acrylic fabrics are heat-sensitive and can shrink in steam-cleaning, dryers, and hot water.
Installation in a Few Easy Steps The general installation process for both traditional retractable awnings and drop screens is pretty simple: attach the correct number of mounting brackets using the appropriate fixing and insert the torsion (square) bar. The simplicity of installing awnings is what makes them ideal for do-it-yourself weekend projects. The exact installation steps, naturally, vary depending on the awning being installed (so always read the manufacturers specific instructions!), but these are the general processes. For a drop screen:1. Assemble the screen itself, putting together the roller (called the headerbox), similar to an old-fashioned shade.2. Install the mounting brackets at the top and around the door frame or the beam of the gazebo or porch.3. Snap in the headerbox, making sure that the bottom rail of the screen is toward the inside of the room.4. If there are vertical side guides, measure and cut them according to the height of the opening, and then screw them in place and snap them in position with the headerbox. If there are guide wires, screw the bottom brackets into place, and attach the wires to the cassette. Be sure everything is level and plumb.
retractable and fixed awnings: Visibility. Many fixed awnings use stanchions or posts which can block the view; retractable awnings are suspended, either by springloaded arms or with guidewires, depending on the syste. Since they dont require external support, they allow uninterrupted views. Easy installation. Retractable awnings are very simply mounted onto the structure at points like a wall or beam without heavy labor or construction. Variety of use. Retractable awnings can go in small or special areas, such as over windows, where fixed canopies would not be appropriate. Changeability. Retractable awnings can move according to different weather conditions, such as changing the slope of the awning during rain, closing during storms, or using a series of awnings across a long outdoor area that follows the sunlight.
